Janis - Simple Separation is a multi-disciplinary practice, how do you find that to be more valuable than a group of mediators collaborating with a separate legal practice?
Christina - Simple Separation provides a convenient one-stop shop service. We help people reach an agreement and then make it legal. We work with modern and like-minded practitioners who are committed to helping parties reach an agreement as quickly and peacefully as possible. Part of our solution includes independent legal advice, so parties are fully informed before they negotiate and collaborate. We bridge the gap between parties.
Janis - You are passionate about keeping parties out of Court, how does that look in practice with high conflict individuals?
Christina - Actually we tend to focus on the niche of assisting amicable to low conflict couples stay out of court and reach agreement as peacefully as possible. We are committing to preserving couple’s post-separation relationship, in the best interests of children.
For high conflict individuals who are reluctant to obtain legal representation, we guide them through the process, helping to prepare them for legal advice. We work with parties on different proposals to help them achieve a fair and equitable settlement.
If individuals are likely to go to court, are not eligible for legal aid and can’t afford legal representation, we offer separation and divorce support packages where we help a party to run their own case, and provide some legal support and guidance on how to respond to legal letters. We have partnered up with Jo Birtles from Parting Ways Law to provide this new service. We come across clients who don’t have the finances to fight their day in court to allow them access to see their children or from a financial perspective receive a ‘fair and equitable settlement’. We feel really proud to be able to offer these services to people who need them.
If clients want legal representation in their state, we work closely with a specific law firm that we consider in line with our values.
Janis - You use FamilyProperty in your practice, what is it about FamilyProperty that makes it attractive to you as a mediator?
Christina - It saves us so much time. We are able to see where our clients are in agreement and where they are in dispute very quickly all on the one page. We spend less time on admin. It helps us to keep costs down for the client.
Janis - What are you looking forward to in the next year, what is going to be happening for you or for Simple Separation?
Christina - scaling up our online solution to help more people Australia-wide. We are also looking at expanding our services to offer separation and divorce support, for people who need practical and emotional support whilst transitioning into the next stage of their lives. We are also investigating the possibility of offering out services in NZ. We have plenty of close lawyer contacts so are excited about this opportunity.
